Through the weekend

I would like you to sign into the wiki and make sure your pages are set up. We will begin using the wiki more and more and I need you to be ready to jump right into the assignments. Become comfortable with the format of the wiki and the possibilities afforded to it as a writing medium.

Take a look at these three pages for more information on what you can do with a wiki
*Getting Started
*Text Formatting Rules
*Sandbox for practice

Also, take a look at JoeSchmo's wiki page and use this as a template to clean up your wiki. I will be deleting the /PaperOne's from our first day of class (it was an example).

And look through the latest assignments: /Jan19 and /MyTechWriting
I will be assessing your work Sunday afternoon. Make sure they are at their most polished state.

/MyTechWriting (under daily assignments section)

Answer these questions as fully as possible
Please flesh out all answers to give me a feel of what this course can become - we are looking for the full potential of the course and your experience with College Writing 2.

What technology's are you comfortable with?

How long have you been using computers? What sort of experiences have you had with their use?
-Do you make images, sites, code...?
-Does the computer spark and crash as soon as you near it?
-Is it a hate/love relationship?

Since we have been in class for two weeks now and you have been exposed to the wiki, what are your expectations of the class?
-What needs to happen to make you more comfortable with the writing medium?
-What sort of pre-writing techniques do you do before typing an assignment?
-What kind of assignments would you like to see?
-What do you think you need to do to make this class work for you and your schedules?

Objectives and Expectations

Today we will be going over the objectives of the course and my expectations of you.
Also, I will be asking you about yourself and experiences with the technology that we are experimenting with.

Class Objectives
*A new writing medium - wiki - and it's usage in class
*Short readings to use as writing inspiration
*A "knowledge base" implemented through the wiki
*A class centered around writing, the thought processes behind using the technology, using what you know, and adding upon that knowledge with what you can "come to know"
*Have fun with the class
My Expectations
*Attendance
*Completion of assignments before class
*Full thoughts and full paragraphs
*Check the wiki or blog often for comments and assignments

Jan19 Daily Assignment

You have read the introduction to The Great Fairy Tale Tradition by Jack Zipes. In this introduction is a passage on page xii:
All the early writers of fairy tales borrowed from other literary and oral tales, and thus their narratives can be regarded as retellings that adapt the motifs, themes, and characters to fit their tastes and the expectations of the audiences for which they were writing.

And on page xiii:
And it (the way in which the Grimm brothers collected tales) involved oral procreation of tales that became very relevant for the survival of people in specific societies, the interaction of oral and literary tales, and the writing down, repetition, and transformation of relevant tales.

Also, you have read a fairy tale of your choosing within the TGFTT book.

On your assignment page in your wiki, take some time and reflect on the tale you read for today. For each question, write a full paragraph or more of thoughtful answers with references to the story as examples.
  1. In a paragraph, give us a quick summary of the events within the tale and any relevant information.
  2. Considering the tale's written date, what expectations do you think the readers had of this tale? In other words, why would this tale have been worth reading?
  3. What sort of society was this tale representing? Is this tale geared toward the peasant class or the higher class? Why?

Introduction to the Fairy Tale
