Jan19 Daily Assignment

You have read the introduction to The Great Fairy Tale Tradition by Jack Zipes. In this introduction is a passage on page xii:
All the early writers of fairy tales borrowed from other literary and oral tales, and thus their narratives can be regarded as retellings that adapt the motifs, themes, and characters to fit their tastes and the expectations of the audiences for which they were writing.

And on page xiii:
And it (the way in which the Grimm brothers collected tales) involved oral procreation of tales that became very relevant for the survival of people in specific societies, the interaction of oral and literary tales, and the writing down, repetition, and transformation of relevant tales.

Also, you have read a fairy tale of your choosing within the TGFTT book.

On your assignment page in your wiki, take some time and reflect on the tale you read for today. For each question, write a full paragraph or more of thoughtful answers with references to the story as examples.
  1. In a paragraph, give us a quick summary of the events within the tale and any relevant information.
  2. Considering the tale's written date, what expectations do you think the readers had of this tale? In other words, why would this tale have been worth reading?
  3. What sort of society was this tale representing? Is this tale geared toward the peasant class or the higher class? Why?
